The pupils visited Rouken Glen Park. They met with Ranger Katy who showed them a map & model of the park and discussed all the different areas and some examples of wildlife that they may see. They then explored the Wildlife garden, completing a series of tasks based upon their senses which allowed them to discover areas, plants and insects that they usually wouldn't have seen. They were particularly impressed with the red mushrooms that they found whilst investigating smell!

The children went pond dipping. They used nets to catch pondlife and scooped this into a tray of water. From here they used an identification booklet to identify what they found. Some of their favourites were a leech, boatman and a pondsnail! When they returned from their rainy visit they used clay to create an model of one of the creatures that they had found.

We started this week by collecting our tunnels and checking to see if we could identify any prints. We think we have had mice and rats visit and leave little tracks, but we are going to reset them, find some new hiding places and check again. We spent the rest of the session working on our map.. it is nearly finished and it looks great. Looking forward to getting back outside next week and collecting ingredients for soup!

SSS Group 2 Discover Woolsbarrow Hillfort and it's history and local geography.

SSS Groups 2, 3, 4 discover Swyre Head the highest point in the Isle of Purbeck. The students were able to view places they had visited and build a picture of where that were in relation to other places.

We set some bug traps with Michelle, from Borders Forest Trust, and identified Insects.

We fed Barnabas with pig nuts and fruit snacks, gave the hens mealy worms for their 2 o’clock (Sarah taps on the kitchen window with her beak if we are late), and checked for reptiles (slow worms, common lizards) under the reptile mat. A reptile mat is an artificial refuge for reptiles and can be made of metal or roofing felt. Perhaps we need to wait until spring to see reptiles basking out. They can shelter in the wall in the winter.

Today we Alec and Robert found 1 snail, 1 slug, 1 earthworm, 1 beetle, a few ants, 1 earwig and 1 spider
