Nate and Elowen discussed the uses of rivers and what the positive or negative effects of these might be. Although not all of these relate to the River Wey, a lot like tourism, water sports and fishing still do.

Learning about British wildlife

Visit to the Southend-on-Sea aquarium. Learning about species of fish and creatures found in the British coastline.

4.5 miles 2pm - 6.30pm. Another incredibly hot day and a plan to walk mostly in woods (it makes for more interesting walking anyway!) We set off out of Wetton across beautifully sunny, green fields, down a steep hill toward the Manifold trail where we picked up the thankfully tree lined trail all the way to Wetton Mill and the river there. Some ice cream was eaten at this point and we made our way back slowly, uphill and through woods and fields back in to Wetton. The things we saw and named on sight were: Cherry, Hawthorn, Sycamore, Ash, Birch, Willow, Elder, Beech, Oak, Hazel, Holly, Sloe (?) Common Alder and BlackthornTrees. We saw (or heard) Crows, Sparrows, Sky Lark, Wagtail, Chiff Chaff, Robin, Pheasant, blackbird, tree creeper, curlew and Swifts. We later ID'd the big dandelion like plant as Goat's Beard.

We missed the walk with our home ed group on Wednesday so we did the Shalford to Guildford walk as a family on Sunday 11 July. We started at Shalford Park through meadows and along the river Wey. We noticed how pleasant it was to walk along the river in Shalford but the water seemed to look dirty in Guildford. We found a leaking sewage patch on the path next to the river. There was a lot of evidence of how the river was used in the past with the mills, timber etc and how it is used today kayaking, fishing, eating out etc.
