The group researched all about John Muir, the Scottish Outdoors Access Code and learned why he is so important today for conservation. They also learned about maps and using a compass, drawing a map of their wild spaces - some even went orienteering, using a compass and map.

The group explored lots of different wild spaces with water - the sea, ponds and streams. Some tadpoles were found whilst pond dipping as well as other pond insects.

We learned all about different types of trees and how to identify them as well as learning how important they are for our planet. As well as being really important they can be really fun to climb and explore - being careful not to damage any of course.

Over the weeks the group have searched and found loads of mini beasts when being Nature Detectives and finding out what lives and grows in their wild spaces. Some built mini beast hotels to encourage insects which can be great for our gardens and not just pests as some people think.

On the 12th of June 2021, we make a fire and also discovered different plants and flowers.

Yesterday, we had a whole school trip to Maryculter Woods. First of all, the children in P5-P7 became rangers for their P1-P4 buddies. They organised a scavenger hunt, a bug hunt and a meet the tree activity. After a quick snack, we split into different groups: the younger children did bark rubbings with their teachers and the P4-P7s made bug hotels and went on a forest walk. We learned to play Scatter which is really fun game. After all that activity, there was last surprise. Mrs. Downie lined us all up on a wooden bridge. She told us she wanted to take one more photo. Just as we were all smiling at the camera, she threw a bucket of water at us. After that, there was only one thing for it...a water fight in the stream! We had a great day, but were a little soggy going home in the car.

We stayed home because of the rain but it meant we could give some proper time to identifying some of the bird calls we'd heard recently. We also continued with our mapping - Finn prints out all the relevant trees and Zooey draws any new birds we've discovered and we photo copy old ones and then we make an images over the relevant spot on our map. The birds we (hope!) we ID'd using the APP were a wren (song and alarm call), chiff chaff, little owl and a pheasant in Danebridge. blackbird, song thrush and chiff chaff in Calton and coal tit, blue tit, pheasant, great tit, goldfinch and nut hatch in Holme. The two flowers are from Calton - a birds foot trefoil and a yellow pimpernel. We also ID'd the Early Purple Orchid we'd photographed in Holme.
