This was us going for a walk in Alva and seeing what wild plants we could find, as you can see we found and took some nice photos!!

Not really John Muir related, but a story that deserves to be shared. An older gentleman who lives near the school had been having a spot of trouble with youngsters in the community. As a goodwill gesture, some of the John Muir group visited and weeded his front garden for him. Here is the story of what we did by one of the participants, Leon: We helped an old man on 9th June. We walked to his house with our hand tools to dig his garden. We had 3 hand forks, a digging fork, a rake, gloves, bin bags and a litter picker. We pulled and dug the weeds out of his garden and put them in the brown bin. We also put some rubbish in his blue bin. He was very thankful, and gave us £10 to go into our John Muir fund for equipment. Mr Nicol: The three boys, Leon, Alfie and Ryley did a fantastic job, and did the school proud with the job they did. Well done lads!

4.8 miles 1pm - 6pm. We drove far south this time - to Calton. We knew it was going to be super hot and sunny so we chose a walk through a wood (Musden Wood) for the first part. There were wild flowers and birds galore! We saw all the old favourite trees but there were mostly Ash and Hawthorn. We couldn't see very many birds but we could hear them all around so we did a lot of recording. We took our time through the wood and these were all the things we saw (more when we get to do the ID of stuff we didn't know later in the week): Sparrows, Jackdaw, Buzzard, Blackbird, Robin, Ducks, Magpie. Orange tip and common blue butterflies, crane flies. Rowan, Hawthorn, Ash, Blackthorn, Sycamore, Holly, Hazel, Elder, Goat Willow, Oak and Beech Trees. And the plants we could ID on sight were: Wild Garlic, Dock, Pink Campion, Dandelion, Cleavers, Rose, Thistle, Grass, Fern, Bluebells, Cow parsley, Honey Fungus, jelly ear Fungus, Brambles and Forget -me-nots.

When we went to the River Wey at Frensham we did a water survey. We tested the water and it was very clear - level 5. This was the same as at the Haslemere branch of the river. The River had River weed . We found 6 shrimp and we found 1 fish and we found 3 Leeches .

Today marks the start of National School Grounds Week. To mark the occasion, the older children worked with their younger buddies to help them design and decorate a plant pot. When they were dry, we planted sunflower seeds. After all that hard work, we were very hungry. As it was such a nice day, the P6 and P7 children decided eat their lunch outside.

In a couple of weeks we will be taking our P1-P4 buddies to Marculter Woods. When we are there, we will be leading them through some of the activities we have done in Forest School and becoming their very own personal rangers. Today, we decided which activities we were going to lead and had a quick practise. Next week, we will need to write the risk assessments to keep them safe.
