As part of St Johns commitment to exploring and discovering more about Hackworth Park in Shildon, students take part in hedge maintenance and pruning. This hedge was identified as starting to intrude on a public footpath, restricting access to pedestrian traffic and dog walkers. This meant that people enjoying the park on this footpath, including some who access the park using mobility scooters and mobility aids, had begun to start walking/driving on the grass and mud. The St Johns team sympathetically pruned and trained this living hedge to not only keep it healthy but also to improve access.

Contributing to their John Muir award students from St Johns school in Bishop Auckland apply their horticultural skills to maintaining Hackworth Park in Shildon for everyone to enjoy and easily have access to; in partnership with the local council employees who work in the park. During the event the students had the opportunity to learn why this type of work has to be done as well as discovering and identifying the different plants which needed their horticultural support.

Sessions are conducted weekly with the group completing 3 hours per session.
