In scouts we picked up litter from different streets and then took it to the recycling bins.

Walking along the new Foss loop- we came up with our own names for plants. Including the covid test kit plant (soft rush).

Liz Auty, Conservation Manager from the John Muir Trust showed us how to remove tree tubes and stakes- its now deer fenced so the trees should be safe now to grow.

We looked at the cup marks and came up with idea about what people used them for.

we also removed some sitka trees that had seeded.

lots of wheelbarrow trips to remove all the plastic tubes and stakes from the hillside. Great to see it clear and young trees growing.

Today we started to learn the ancient art of Coppicing Hazel trees to allow us to harvest staves for building Hurdles , an old fashioned fence. We use tree loppers and Bill Hooks to thin the branches.

We also had some trees that needed to be felled as they had died of Ash Die back which is a disease affecting Ash trees. We need to keep the wood on site so as not to spread the disease to other woodlands.
