WE had great fun building dens in our wild spaces using only the natural materials around us.

Families had loads of fun completing their John Muir Discover Family Award.

Mrs White is very proud of the enthusiasm and effort P5 have all shown for this project. Everyone has worked hard to learn about, and take care of our school woodland! This certificate is hard earned, and much deserved. Congratulations!!

At Inverkeithing, we are lucky to have such expansive grounds to explore. Today we decided to have a walk around the next to our outdoor classroom and do a litter pick and tidy. It's always a good feeling to see the place looking better, with no rubbish lying about . The group get a real feeling of satisfaction from making Inverkeithing High a nicer place to be. We also found a chair stuck up a tree, on closer examination, we found that the tree had now grown around it, making it a permanent fixture. It's amazing how nature just takes over when left to it's on devices.

For our Explorer Award we've decided to map the whole of the Peak District via our family walks. We often walk in the Peak District but after spending so long getting to know our local 'patch' so in depth we feel as though we move through the landscape rather than really getting to know it. For the next 20 weeks (or so) we will choose a different part of the Peak District to visit for our weekly walk and pay attention! Finn will be identifying trees - those that he knows by sight but also taking photos or samples back home for those that he doesn't know. Zooey will be identifying birds - sometimes by sight and other times (when we can't see them!) by recording their songs and using an app to help. Math will be paying more attention to the local plants and animals and recording those. Sarah is going to be in charge of the mapping. We also hope to record pollution levels and to try to do our bit by giving up as much plastic as we can from our everyday lives....

4 miles (2.30pm - 5.00pm). Today the weather didn't look great so we didn't venture too far - Pott Shrigley - but we saw a lot of stuff! Our walk went out of the village, past some farms and in to a valley with a stream running through it. The sound of the stream made it difficult to record the birds we could hear and then the rain came down! Despite heavy rain and having to cut our walk short we managed to see and identify loads of birds and trees and plants. We saw rabbits! We identified these birds by sight: wag tail, gold finches, ducks and ducklings, a heron, tree creeper, blackbird, robin and blue tit. We also identified a pheasant by sound! We took some sound recordings of birds we couldn't see so that we could try to identify them when we got home. We also saw lots of trees. These are the ones we recognised by sight: birch, ash, hawthorn, hazel and beech, holly, goat willow, blackthorn, sycamore. We took photos of other trees we didn't recognise to ID at home... A very successful first walk!
