We all made mini beast houses out of all the materials in the woodlands. The boys made really really big ones they even had a balcony. It was really fun. Big animals like foxes and badgers would like a larger habitat. Slugs will like it cold and damp so they might like the smaller bug houses. Wood lice might like either, the big houses or the other smaller houses.

Starting our journey on this sunny autumn day (no coats!) at Farnham train station on the St Swithun's Way from Farnham to Winchester. We'll undertake the walk over a number of days. Not sure how much we'll complete with baby in tow but we'll see. The journey was chosen as John Muir had spent many years walking in the wilderness so we thought we'd like to undertake a journey too.

We walked from Farnham train station through Farnham town centre towards the North to some fields and a country lane. The second part of the walk was interesting as we discovered new fields and public footpaths. We spent some time in Gostrey Meadow park collecting litter. S managed to remove a beer can from the river Wey with a litter picker. We took the litter home to examine what we had collected and made bar and tally charts of the different types of litter of which plastic being the most numerous. We also examined the trees in the park using the Tree Trail document from Farnham Town council. We discovered a lot of non native species as well as native trees. S did some nature journaling and drew one of the Golden Weeping Willows in the park. We also discussed how the river Wey is a tributary of the River Thames. We also practised map reading. We enjoyed the last part of the walk away from town into the fields and footpaths. There was a spot high up where you could look down to the town.

Keeping it Wild trainee Max here - all of us trainees visited Kidbrooke Village to see the awesome sites and surrounding area. After lunch, we went to Birdbrook Nature Reserve to carry out conservation work. When we got to Birdbrook, we had a short guided walk and were told about the species that lived there. At the end of the walk, we found some refuge and Fay told us that perhaps we could see a slowworm if we were lucky. Fortunately, we saw a slowworm! We also saw an invasive species - an alpine newt. When carrying out the conservation work, a common lizard appeared much to our surprise. We also saw a wall lizard and great spotted woodpecker. It was an excellent day and we were very lucky to see such a range of species in central London!
