In July, we took part in adventurous trip up to Cardunneth Pike, a prominent hill overlooking Cumrew and beyond. We were able to learn how these uplands are managed and were treated to views stretching right across the Fellfoot Forward scheme area. Everyone took on the challenge of exploring a new wild place and returned home ready to share their experiences with others.

Kate began today’s session by showing us some examples of artwork from the Stone Age which has been found in caves around the world. We ventured into the woods and had 15 minutes to collect as many materials as we could to make our own piece of natural art. 🪵 🍃

We used the natural materials that we found in the wood to create some animal based artwork. We had two owls, a wolf, a horse, some fish and even a dinosaur! 🦖 Can you spot our animals in the photographs, some were really inventive!

For one final challenge we pooled our resources and made one giant hand! 🤚

Today we focussed on teamwork. We learned about leadership, organisation and compromise. We had to change our plans due to covid but we still managed to contribute fully. We explored the school grounds in an orienteering task where each team had a leader and they had to form a plan on how to reach each of the points on the map. Afterwards we then reviewed each teams plan and if it had been effective or not. We wanted to know more about our ecosystem in the school so we also worked in pairs looking at which trees and plants we could identify. The pupils also were asked to photograph the plants and we picked the two winners of the best photos at the end. The pupils also discussed their findings and we created a mental map of where each of the trees/plants were found.

Today we looked at how we can help our school ecosystem. We learned about the importance of bees in keeping our environment stable. We took the responsibility of planting pollinators so that we can help the local bee population. The pupils also looked at cleaning up the school grounds and recycling. We talked about the amount of plastics in the oceans and the importance of reusing. We made bird feeders from the empty bottles that were collected.
