When you get a wee bit obsessive about getting Rhododendron ponticum out of the ground...

On Thurs 22nd Nov the team headed out to explore the east side of Callander. The drizzle and grey conditions didn't put us off! We did a circular route starting in the centre of Callander taking in the Auchenlaich chambered cairn and the Auchinlaich hill fort. After leaving the hill fort Ross spotted a red squirrel and we have logged our sighting on the Saving Scotlands Red Squirrels website. We enjoyed spending a few minutes watching and listening to the water tumbling down Bracklinn Falls. A peaceful walk back through the woods and then a nice hot drink in the office!

As part of our John Muir Discover Level we pulled the Rosebay Willowherb at Rouken Glen Park to make way for new flowers in the spring, particularly some delicate orchids. As a reward, ranger Katy had a Kelly Kettle to make some delicious hot chocolate. Perfect for the outdoor weather.

Unfortunately our woodland site has lots of plastic tree covers in it. They would have been put in to support the young oak trees that were planted at some point in the last 30 years or so. Unfortunately they were never moved so many have stayed on the young trees which is causing them to rot the tree, or they are just laying around the woodland. Our Free to Learn group have been clearing them all and removing them from the trees, great job!
