camping on Inchcailloch, Loch Lomond
-
I organised a camping trip to Inchcailloch, an island on Loch Lomond, for myself and several work colleagues. I had been before but they had not. I was able to share my knowledge of the island, accrued during paid work strimming bracken back as a ranger for Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. I had also been involved with repairs to a wooden boardwalk, and fencing, on the island. We got a short boat ride over from the mainland, set up camp and enjoy a barbecue and few drinks during the evening, having pre-booked a camping permit we had the entire island to ourselves on a warm early summer evening.
Care was taking to bring our own firewood - burning of live wood and even deadwood is prohibited due to it being habitat for insects and other creatures.
We ensured, through tidiness and bin bags, no trace of our visit was visible the next morning. Our trip was documented through photographs shared on social media and shared on by our company and the national park.
The island is home to a riot of bluebells at the time of year, has deer trotting about and has many ancient protected trees. Various protection designations cover the island, include SSSI and it being a National Nature Reserve. It is the only island on the loch which requires camping by prior booking of permits, in order that the national park restricts numbers to protect the environment.
