Conserve / take Responsibility:
How have you taken responsibility?
What have you done to make a difference and put something back for wild places?Working with SGCT volunteers we helped to build and place new bird boxes within Lydebrook Dingle, providing additional nesting opportunities for the woodland birds that live there and to attract the pied flycatcher back.
Having already explored and understood the geography and habitat of the Dingle we surveyed the boxes we helped to site, weekly, with the SGCT, using guidance from the British Trust of Ornithology (BTO) to gather data about the birds using them. This was then submitted by SGCT to the BTO nest record scheme.
We ensured that the nesting boxes were maintained and well looked after during our visits throughout the year and in particular during the nesting season and then they were made ready for this years season.
We recorded for each box the nesting details, took photos and left trial cameras to record the fledging to share and help educate other people about the birds using this site.
The 30 nesting boxes are established now for the future with the hope that the blue tit and great tit will in the coming years be joined by the pied flycatcher.
