The River Wey's Locks
-
HOW LOCKS WORK. The water in the lock is lower than upstream. Put your boat in the lock and tie it up. You shut the downstream gates and slowly open the upstream gates to let water in. When the water is the same level as upstream untie your boat and motor out. Millmead Lock was built in 1762. it is the first lock on the Godalming Navigation. The wooden gates have been replaced many times since then, but the bricks are 260 years old! They only use oak wood for the gates because it is less likely to rot and lasts longer.
