Beach walk, bird watch and beach tackle clean
-
We went on a 3.5km coastal path and beach walk from Helen's Bay to the boat house at Seapark and back again. Duration was approximately 2 hours. The weather was beautiful. From our house the walk is at first forest paths, then a rocky coastal path and then the beach. It is the same stretch of coast on which we saw and photographed an otter a few weeks ago. We did not see him today, but we did see a lot of birds and wildlife (see list below). We looked through the beaches and coves and collected as much fishing tackle as we could. Plastic fishing line, hooks and tackle are unfortunately all around our beaches. This type of waste is a hazard to sea birds and mammals. We photographed the huge amount of line we found tangled on the shore in the seaweed. This was all removed and put in the rubbish bins in the country park. My brothers helped me with a bird watch over the time we walked. Blue-tits 2, blackbirds 2, crows -4, seagulls 2, oystercatchers 7, turnstone 1, Janet 1, starling 1, robin 1, bullfinch 1, sparrow 2, coal tit 1, goldfinch 1, tern 2, wood pigeons 4, eider duck 1, magpie 2. We also saw 2 grey squirrels and lots and lots of St Mark's flies.
