Walk to Buckholm Tower and Dobbie's Grave
-
We walked from Heatheryett cemetery and up round to the notorious Buckholm Tower, where James Pringle murdered a man and his son in the dungeon and hung their bodies from hooks! The man's wife cursed Pringle and he was tormented by visions of pursuing hounds until he died! We explored the dungeon, then went around and up to Dobbie's Grave, a Piper who accepted a wager to pipe from Lauder to Galashiels but died on the hillside, short of the town. Although the theme of the day seemed to be death, we saw plenty of life, deer, hare, birds, mosses, lichens and lots of cows and calves. It was interesting to compare the landscape with last week and the wildwood project. A lack of insects, trees and variety of plants was noted on the grazed areas
